Who is a Superintendent?
A construction superintendent is the contractor’s representative who is responsible for continuous field supervision, coordination, and completion of the work. The construction superintendent "runs" the job site. The construction superintendent relies on many supervisors for making sure the work is put in place correctly and efficiently. Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
- Organizes and coordinates the work of craft employees on construction projects

- Keeps cost records on work performed and materials
- Is responsible for the control of costs in materials and wages
- Exercises control over rate of construction progress in order to complete construction project within time limits
- Inspects construction work to enforce conformity to specifications
- Supervises craft supervisors, clerical staff, and other personnel employed in construction work
- Performs other related duties as assigned
A construction project superintendent has to have many years of experience in the construction industry. In addition, companies always seek for leaders who can manage a large number of workers through motivation and proper utilization of their skills. Superintendents have knowledge of all phases of building construction, including work commonly done by the various
building crafts. Ability to manage material costs and wages as well as to read blueprints and specifications for building are required skills for a superintendent. Some acceptable qualifications of a superintendent are:
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Four years of responsible building construction experience two years of supervisory experience in building construction work in addition to the preparation required OR
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or architectural engineering with a few years of field experience
