Who is a Project Engineer?
A construction project engineer is responsible for assisting the project superintendent or project manager. Most of the time a four-year engineering college degree is required for a job as a project engineer. Often college graduates join a company as either assistant superintendent or assistant estimator. A project engineer who plans to become a project manager with field experience usually works in the field for a few years to gain experience next to a senior superintendent. Other project engineers who rather concentrate on making a career in estimating and hope to one day become a senior estimator, assist senior estimators and project managers for a few years before they get promoted.
Some of the main responsibilities of project engineers are to:
1. Schedule preparation and resource forecasting fo engineering activities relating to the construction project
2. Performance management of the architectural and engineering vendor.
3. Assuring accuracy of financial assessments with relations to project schedules.
4. Ensuring projects are completed according to project plans.
5. Managing project team resources and training
6. Learn from a senior project superintendent or project manager.
A project engineer is not a P.E. A P.E. is a professional engineer who has licenses to sign off structures of a building and other attributes. Entry wage for a project engineer vary between $17 and $25 and it picks up as they become more experienced.
