Safety Training

MBI is proud to offer the highest construction industry safety training seminars.  All seminars are designed to meet with the current OSHA and federal regulations and guidelines.  Listed are a few of the safety training seminars that we provide.  For information about additional training needs please contact Phil Mercuris or Tom Suckow at (515)288-8904.

Confined Space
Many workers are injured and killed each year while working in confined spaces. An estimated 60% of the fatalities have been among the would-be rescuers. A confined space can be more hazardous than regular workspaces for many reasons. OSHA requires training to ensure that employees involved in confined space work can perform their job functions safely. The hazards encountered and associated with entering and working in confined spaces is capable of causing bodily injury, illness, and death to the worker. Accidents occur among workers because of failure to recognize that a confined space is a potential hazard.
MBI offers safety training on confined space that covers specific items for the authorized entrant, the attendant and the entry supervisor.

Core Elements of Safety
With the ever growing demand for safety, individuals within companies have found themselves being assigned the safety responsibilities that safety experts are supposed to know.  MBI created a seminar that targets the 'core elements' that any safety manager or field supervisor would have to understand in order to implement a risk management loss control program.

Fall Protection Training
Falls are the second leading cause of death each year in the United States (after traffic accidents)! Over 10,000 people are killed every year as a result of falls...and 200,000 to 300,000 people are disabled. Eight-five percent of all falls that occur on the job result in "lost work time."  Employers should provide a training program for each employee who might be exposed to fall hazards. The program should enable each employee to recognize the hazards of falling and should train each employee in the procedures to be followed in order to minimize these hazards. New employees should be provided fall protection training, and for all other employees as necessary, to assure that the employees maintain the skill needed to perform their job safely.
MBI offers a unique program that focuses on fall management, designed to provide participants with the knowledge they need to understand how to best implement fall protection procedures.

Forklift and Skid Steer Loaders
The Industrial Truck Association (ITA) estimates that American industry has more than 850,000 powered industrial trucks. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that industrial truck accidents cause about 85 fatalities and almost 100,000 injuries annually. The adoption of training requirements for industrial truck operators 1910.178(l) will help reduce fatalities and accidents.
MBI offers two course on this subject:
- Train the Trainer for Rough Terrain Forklift & Skid Steer Loaders - Your company's trainers will be provided with the information to train your workers to be operators of forklifts and skid steers.
- Forklift & Skidsteer Operator Training - MBI trains your operators in this opportunity to receive operator training in one day for two types of equipment.

Lead Safe Renovator Training
As of April 22, 2010 EPA regulations became effective that require specific duties of those doing renovation, remodeling and repainting (RRP) in child-occupied structures built before 1978. One of those duties is to have a Lead-Safe Renovator on site. This individual must be certified by the Iowa Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) who requires successful passing of an 8-hr. course before application is made.

Renovation, Remodeling and Repainting activities include removing painted components such as doors and windows, repairing painted surfaces or preparing them for repainting, replacing windows and removing walls and ceilings. Anyone who disturbs a total of one square foot of paint in any type of housing structure or any child-occupied facility, like a daycare or kindergarten room, built before 1978 comes under the requirements of the regulations.

The course is designed to educate attendees on how to conduct RRP activities in a lead-safe manner. Topics covered include background information on lead, health effects of exposure to lead, the regulations, worksite preparation, conducting interim controls and worksite clean-up.

MBI classes are currently scheduled for:

OSHA 10 Hour
The 10 Hour OSHA training class has been almost universally recognized as the way to get workers properly trained in OSHA safety procedures.  This training can benefit new workers, experienced workers and even workers who have already taken the 10 Hour class years ago but who are unfamiliar with changes and updates to OSHA rules and regulations.

MBI classes are currently scheduled for:

OSHA 30 Hour
The OSHA 30-Hour course is a must for anyone responsible for the safety and health of their employees.  Anyone with jobsite safety responsibility should attend this course.  Many owners, construction managers and general contractors are requiring that safety representatives be available on the jobsite having, at a minimum, the OSHA 30 Hour Course.

Rigger Training
Over 90% of rigging-related accidents are caused by human error.  How a load is attached to a crane can make the difference between a successful lift and an unfortunate accident. And rigging-related accidents can often be deadly, due to the large and heavy loads that are lifted.  A coworker can be injured or killed, and expensive equipment and cargo could be damaged or destroyed... even the crane itself. The rigger is ultimately responsible for the safe lift. This person must know what needs to be lifted, how much it weighs, where it’s going, the sling best suited for the job and how to communicate with the crane operator. Proper rigging is critical in executing a successful lift.
MBI offers Qualified Rigger Training that teaches rigging practices that limit risk by helping attendees identify risks involved in rigging, and establish a plan of action to create a safe and correct set of rigging practices.

Safety Certification Day
MBI designed the Safety Certification Day to provide construction workers with an understanding of proper safety procedures on six major safety topics: fire extinguishers; electrical safety; PPE; scaffolding; ladders; and fall protection.  Attendees of this seminar will receive a certificate of training and course materials.

Scaffolding
An estimated 2.3 million construction workers deal with scaffolding each year. In a Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) study, 72% of workers injured in scaffold accidents attributed the accident either to the planking or support giving way, or to the employee slipping or being struck by a falling object. All of these can be controlled by proper training.
MBI offers a course that is particularly designed to cover general scaffold requirements, Tubular Welded Frame Scaffold, Mobile scaffold and requirements for the competent person.

Trenching and Excavating
Excavating is recognized as one of the most hazardous construction operations. Excavation cave-ins cause serious and often fatal injuries to workers in the United States. Trenching and excavation hazards are addressed in specific standards for the construction industry.
MBI offers a Competent Person training seminar designed to provide the scope and application of OSHA’s Subpart P Excavation Standard.  Completion of this seminar provides the training and safety awareness components of designating an individual as the ‘Competent Person’ for your company.

Workers Compensation
Employees who understand what workers compensation is, how it works and how it will benefit both themselves and the company will save you time and money. Working within the system ensures that injured employees receive the medical treatment they need and return to work as quickly as possible.  MBI is offering a workers comp seminar where attendees will learn about trends that are developing, the new and upcoming changes in workers comp, developing a return to work program and how to properly handle a claim.
