MBI Receives the AGCA CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD at Orlando Convention -- MBI, 98 Years Strong
We are pleased to announce that the Master Builders of Iowa is the recipient of the 2009 Large Chapter of the Year Award presented by the AGC of America at the AON Build America Awards Banquet, held Friday March, 19, 2010 in conjunction with the AGCA National Convention in Orlando, Florida. This is the most prestigious award that the National AGCA bestows upon the Chapter that best exhibits the tenets of the AGGA, skill, responsibility and integrity. Applications are judged by a National Committee of judges comprised of AGCA Executive Committee members, National Officers and Chapter peers. The competition for the award is always very rigorous among the 98 Chapters of the AGCA, located in every state of the Union, including Puerto Rico. The AGCA Chapter of the Year award also carries with it the AGCA Chapter Chair of the Year and the Chapter Executive of the year. Mike Christiason, 2009 MBI Chairman of the Board and Scott Norvell, MBI President, respectively, are honored as part of the award.
MBI Board Chairman, Mike Tousley, MBI Immediate Past Chairman, Mike Christiason and Scott Norvell took the stage at the large awards ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the MBI. A supporting cast of members, including Tom Werderitsch and Tim Conlon, 2006 and 2004 MBI Past Chairs respectively and Board member Steve Swanson were also present to share in the recognition and national celebration of the MBI member accomplishments recognized with this award.
This was not MBI’s first trip to the awards stage at this year’s AGC National Convention. At the opening session, MBI received the very prestigious AGC IN THE COMMUNITY AWARD. This award recognizes outstanding community involvement either directly or through outstanding member contributions. In this case, Hubbell Construction’s community service for their construction of a low-cost housing unit for disadvantaged families in nine days. This project is an extraordinary accomplishment by Hubbell and their partners benefiting the Central Iowa area. MBI staff performed safety services as part of the team comprised of scores of construction businesses who devoted their time, talent, energy and financial resources to lend a helping hand and heart to this very significant community endeavor.
Last year, MBI and its members were awarded the National Diversity Leadership Award at the 2008 National Convention during the National Leadership Breakfast held at the San Diego Convention Center. This award is given annually by the National AGCA to the Chapters who exhibit leadership in diversity and cultural understanding in the National and local construction industry. Fernando Aveiga, MBI Multicultural Workforce Coordinator, and Scott Norvell, President and CEO, accepted this award on behalf of members. This was not MBI’s first public recognition in the area of diversity having previously received the First Annual Iowa Lieutenant Governor Diversity Award, an all Iowa competition. This awards ceremony took place at the Polk County Convention complex where hundreds of state leaders gathered to honor the Association for this accomplishment.
These awards are the kind of National Recognition that result from members working together through the MBI and their AGCA partners on a variety of different issues in multiple venues to create value for our industry and our members. And finally, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the AGC of America for bestowing this great honor upon the Master Builders of Iowa and its members.
