Green Training Subsidized by the IWD

Participants of the Energy Fundamentals and Applications course offered by MBI on December 21 -22, will discuss energy performance of buildings, building shells, HVAC, electrical, and other building systems.  Participants will also review the analysis and evaluation of building performance, energy efficiency, environmental quality, first costs, and operating costs.  Strategies to exceed energy code requirements through the ASHRAE Standard 90.1.

Through this training, participants will understand how requirements should be met through the building design, construction, and renovation processes and how to evaluate code compliance during plan review and inspection.

This training will provide 16 CEU contact hours and can be applied towards LEED credential maintenance.  Due to an IWD Green Building grant, $400 of the registration fee will be subsidized for each participant.  The cost for MBI members to attend per participant is reduced from $800 to $400. This fee includes all training, class materials and lunch on both days.

First Day;

  • Analyze the state of Iowa energy code requirements for commercial buildings:  code basis, plan review, enforcement
  • Evaluate and understand the minimum performance levels for a commercial building’s walls, roofs, and windows based on state code requirements
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how system quality, energy efficiency and first cost effect the energy performance of a building
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how trade-offs between building components can be made to still achieve a building that meets energy code
  • Analyze and understand energy rate schedules available in Iowa
  • Evaluate how different rate structures effect system selection for a building

Second Day;

  • Evaluate and understand the minimum performance levels for HVAC systems including boilers, chillers, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop units
  • Evaluate and understand the minimum performance levels for service water heating systems, lighting systems and other equipment in a building
  • Analyze and evaluate strategies to exceed energy code through the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method
