The graduates of the MBEYE on the Future class of 08/09 launched this resourceful website this past may with the vision for creating a hub for information on all the different career paths in construction for students, schools and parents, workers in other industries, and workers already in construction.

A position for a painting estimator had become available at a local company where my my dad had worked for over 30 years. I remember being offered and accepting the position almost 13 years ago now and asking my dad “What have I gotten myself in to, what do I do now?”

With all the changes and improvements that have occurred over the years, the one thing that remains constant in the construction industry is the reward of seeing the accomplishments of your work. For Bill to be able to travel around and know that he played a key role in building many very important structures is something he will be proud of for the rest of his life. That is what makes the construction industry so great and what makes the people involved with it so special!

While I do not consider myself a hero of the industry, I do think I am a unique participant in the industry. I know many women who are involved in the industry from a subcontractor/supplier side, but not many on the general contractor side.

Valarie Meyer is a young woman in an industry that has been traditionally dominated by the male gender, but has definitely opened up with opportunities to females in all aspects from management, to field labor, to equipment operator and whatever else you can imagine.
