MBI Safety Services

Master Builders of Iowa is the recognized leader in providing quality safety services for the construction industry in Iowa. It provides its members with a comprehensive array of dues-included as well as fee-based services.

The following are available to members as part of membership dues:

  •  Member Orientation Program - Within 30 days of joining MBI, a member of our safety staff will contact the new member to schedule a meeting with company safety representation to explain all of MBI’s safety services.
  • General Company Safety Program Evaluation - Meet with member and appropriate personnel to assist members in identifying safety and loss control deficiencies in programs and practices to determine if the member program needs updating or revisions.
  • Pre-construction Safety Planning Meeting - MBI Staff is available to meet with member representatives prior to project commencement to provide recommendations in safety planning and preparations for the specific safety needs and/or requirements of the project.
  • Consultation with Staff Safety Professionals - MBI staff is available to respond to members questions via phone, email or text messaging.
  • OSHA Inspection Assistance - When OSHA shows up on site the MBI safety staff is available to consult with the member about what their rights and responsibilities are during the inspection.
  • OSHA Citation Consultation - MBI professionals will assist members with evaluating & responding to an OSHA citation by making recommendations for a course of action.
  • Jobsite Safety Audit (one per year) - MBI Staff and member representatives ( project manager, safety director) meet at designated jobsite location to conduct an audit of jobsite safety conditions.
  • Online Training Resources -10 Hour and 30 Hour OSHA training is available to all MBI members via MBI’s website at a discounted price. Low priced webinars are conducted throughout the year on various safety related topics.
  • Training Video Library - MBI has an extensive library of safety related videos that members can use free of charge.
  • Various Generic Safety Programs - Safety programs are available online so that members can customize according to their needs.

For those members who desire extra services, MBI offers the following on a pre-arranged fee basis:

  • Jobsite Safety Audits - Members can contract with MBI for safety audits of projects.
  • Annual Safety Contracts Custom Designed for the Member - Members can contract with MBI for safety services of their choosing on an annual basis to reduce costs.
  • Preparation of Company Specific Safety Programs - Members can outsource the writing of specific safety programs to the MBI safety professionals.
  • Webinars - MBI brings safety to member’s computers via the web multiple times a year through webinars designed to bring breaking or hot information.
  • Specific Training Seminars - MBI holds seminars at various locations around the state bringing specific and timely educational opportunities for members to learn more about safety.
  • Risk Management Consultation - MBI can assist members in assessing the risks and hazards associated with a construction project then developing a plan to handle them.
  • MSDS Management - MBI has partnered with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Iowa to bring members an excellent source to manage Material Safety Data Sheets through the web.

MBI SAFETY PROFESSIONALS

PHIL MERCURIS
Phil Mercuris is the Vice President of Safety for Master Builders of Iowa.  For more than 20 years, Phil has been actively involved with safety in the construction industry.  From 1979 to 1988, Phil served as a labor safety and health consultant and Safety Education Director with the State of Iowa, Bureau of Labor (OSHA).  There he gained extensive and technical knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance standards.  Since 1988, Phil has worked for Master Builders of Iowa as the Director and Vice President of Safety and heads the Affiliated Construction Safety Specialists, Inc.

TOM SUCKOW
Tom has been involved in construction safety since 1988 as a safety director for both large and small contractors, as an onsite safety professional and as an independent safety consultant. He started in the construction industry in 1972 as a summer laborer and became full time in the industry in 1976. He has expertise in insurance matters, crisis management and human resources. He is authorized to teach the OSHA Construction 10 & 30 hrs Outreach courses, has received the Associate in Risk Management and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist certifications.
